The Spark Therapy Group team will work directly with the individual and direct care providers (family, respite providers and staffed resource workers) to get a better understanding of why the behaviour is happening. Problem behaviour will be replaced with communication and over time the individual will be taught to tolerate the concept of waiting and being denied access to people, materials, and activities.
Leisure, academic and vocational skills are strengthened during treatment to reduce the likelihood of problem behaviour.
Severe behaviours may include:
- Aggression (physical and verbal)
- Self-injurious behaviour
- Elopement (running away)
- Property destruction
- Sexualised behaviour
- Anti-social behaviour (theft/ fire starting)
